The More You NOAA 2 August 2017, 3:14 pm

Why Wouldn’t We Support The New England Marine Monument? 21 March 2017, 6:02 pm
In an effort to revoke, opponents paint the picture that all fishermen are opposed… Well, we aren’t! Of Menhaden, Stripers Threshers and Whales 8 April 2015, 2:09 pm
ASMFC has a critical decision to make in May. Do they increase harvest at the first sign of improvement, having really no idea what that will mean for predators dependent on bunker, or do they take a different route and manage for the ecosystem.

On Forage Fish… Managing the Unmanaged 4 November 2014, 2:10 pm
Are large-scale fisheries for sandeels, silversides, bay anchovies etc. coming to a coast near you? Really, if you fish, at all, this is important… for a very basic reason — If there’s no bait, there’s no fishing. If you spend more than a few days…

Keeping a Trout for Dinner? 12 July 2013, 2:00 pm
I have not taken a trout home for dinner in a few years. Out of the few dozen rainbow, brown and brook trout that I brought to the net, each fish was released back to the stream and swam back into the depths. I practice catch and release fishing for the health of the streams, knowing that if we were all to keep every fish caught, the rivers would soon be empty. The simplest reason why I release the fish that I catch is that I do not enjoy killing a fish. Rainbow and brown trout are beautifu...

Help Wanted: Seeking New Home Waters 12 July 2013, 1:46 pm
Help Wanted: Fly fishing rabbi seeks new home waters near central New Jersey. Beautiful stream a must. Large trout preferred. Harmony and peace desired. On July 1st, my family and I moved to central New Jersey as I now have the honor and blessing of serving as the rabbi of Temple B’nai Shalom in East Brunswick. Fly Fishing and Conservation 12 December 2011, 6:52 am
When first learning to fly fish, all of our energies are consumed in mastering the basics; getting the right gear, learning to cast, becoming comfortable wading through the stream. Then we hook our first trout. When the line goes taut, our adrenaline spikes. We somehow manage to get the fish to the net and break out in a wide smile, whether the fish is a eight inch brown or an eighteen inch rainbow. We begin to become comfortable in our own skin as anglers and we have held a good number o...

Fly Fishing and Compassion 29 August 2011, 10:15 pm
Compassion is a core value in many religious traditions. Judaism teaches that everyone, no matter how poor, must give tzedakah, charity, to remember that there is always someone out there in a more difficult situation. Jews must also visit the sick, feed the hungry and perform gemilut hasadim, acts of loving kindness.A day of fly fishing in Argentina this spring reminded me that compassion can occur on a stream as well. Although not in the famous fly fishing region of Patagonia, my guide Lucas a...

Fly Fishing & Frustration 17 January 2011, 3:00 am
Fly fishing is filled with times of frustration: getting rained out on the stream, losing a fly in a low hanging branch, being unable to thread your thin tippet line through the hole of a tiny little hook because your hands are too cold. One time I drove an hour from home to fish a new river. When I opened the trunk to put on my gear, I discovered that I had my vest and net, but had left my fly fishing rod at home. Perhaps the ultimate frustration in fly fishing is not catching any fish. Sometim...

Fly Fishing for Tarpon, Permit and Bonefish 15 January 2011, 9:03 am
I am very pleased to be able to share this article by my friend Dr. Michael Attas, a practicing cardiologist, ordained Episcopal priest and avid fly fisher: While I cherish my time on my home waters of the Rockies, I also long for the chance to explore new places with my fly rod and to move into new territories-both physically and spiritually. On a trip to Belize, we searched for the big three for salt water fly fishermen—tarpon, permit and bonefish. Each requires a certain type of equipmen...

Dressing for Cold Weather Fly Fishing 26 January 2021, 10:30 am
While winter fly fishing, I have rarely said I overdressed for a day outside. More often I wished I had been better prepared. I was fishing Muddy Creek a few winters back for the better part of the day trip with Maurice on one of our all day Lewis and Clark expeditions. The mild pleasant morning changed over to a pretty cool cloudy day. I failed to have some proper thick wool socks and it made for some pretty cold feet after a few hours in the stream. Sadly, I knew better and told myself I would...

Trout Carvings - January 2021 by MathFish 20 January 2021, 7:30 am
Just sharing my newest fish carvings. Last weekend, I started 3 fish and carved them on and off throughout the week. This weekend, I painted all three. It was a nice way to spend some time inside watching the snow happen out my window. The first trout was a brookie carving I made as a thank you gift for a friend of mine who really helped me out this past fall. I based it off of a trout I caught a few years ago. I'm happy with how it turned out and I almost wanted to keep it for myself. The ...

Allegheny Native And Their Fly Fishing Passion 10 January 2021, 1:10 pm
There are several fun Pennsylvania fly fishing channels on YouTube, but the guys on Allegheny Native have done a great job sharing some fantastic cinematic images of their angling journeys. Their videos stand out with locations they fish and quality of production. They are hitting plenty of out of the way streams for wild brookies and brown trout. The videos really make you feel like you are part of the scene, if not just wanting to be there with the guys. Nate Burkhart generally shares the stre...

A Fall Day on Big Spring Creek 30 November 2020, 11:20 am
Made it to Big Spring Creek for a nice day on the stream with Derek Eberly. It was mostly cloudy and we had a high air temperature of about 52 degrees. There was a break in clouds with some sun peeking through at about 1:00 pm. A nice day to be out.The water was gin clear and the trout could see us a mile away as we moved up the stream. A normal day on Big Spring Creek. We did obviously try to be stealthy about it, but it was rather difficult. We did see some sporadic #22 BWO starting mid-da...
