I’m About to Live a Dream 8 May 2012, 9:39 pm
I’ve always daydreamed about putting my life on hold and going on some type of Lewis and Clark’esque adventure into the northern Michigan wilderness. Just me, a notebook, a pup tent, a fly rod, a rucksack, a sleeping bag, a good book or two, and the wild places of Michigan’s northern lower and upper peninsula. Read More ......

Rocks Hurt 2 May 2012, 10:05 pm
At one point or another, we’re all eventually baptized by our favorite trout stream. It happens in slow motion, and its almost always cold. Today’s pic is of my son seconds after his first baptism. We were fishing a backcountry Adirondack brookie stream in mid-late summer. I had killed it there on a solo trip Read More ......

Eat Less Brook Trout 29 March 2012, 7:45 pm
Six anglers, 60 brook trout. This is what a 10 brook trout per day bag limit looks like. Notice the photo is in black and white. Just sayin’… Nearly every recent study I’ve read, based on actual field data and not computer simulations or 30 year old creel reports, says that streams with high minimum Read More ......

Temptation 28 March 2012, 9:19 pm
Only in northern Michigan can you get summer, spring, and winter all in the same week. I’ve been thinking a lot about trout lately, but the warm couple weeks we had really has me thinking about carp, panfish, and smallies. I’ve got so much water to explore and re-explore over the summer. And when I Read More ......

Gluttony in Da U.P. 27 March 2012, 7:54 pm
There was a paragraph before this one. It was a very politically correct introduction intended to soften what remains. I deleted it. The Michigan DNR is seeking public comment on a proposed 10 fish per day brook trout limit in the Upper Penninsula (the current daily bag limit is 5 fish). This is ironic for Read More ......

Best April Fool’s Joke Ever 21 March 2012, 11:09 pm
It was like 18 months ago when the project first began. Bjorn Stromsness of Bonefish on the Brain shoots out an email to a group of fellow fly fishing blog writers pitching an idea. A big idea. I’m paraphrasing. Bjorn: ”Dudes, lets all write a short story on whatever we want, then compile all of Read More ......

On Bamboo and Old School Fly Gear 21 March 2012, 8:23 pm
I’ve never really understood some fly anglers’ fascination with bamboo fly rods. I mean, I get the whole nostalgia thing. I get the whole feel the rod loading thing. I get that they’re pretty. 4X Korkers Review: Chrome, Metalhead, Redside, and Fisherman’s Moc 20 February 2012, 3:46 pm
When we last left my search for the world’s best wading boot, I was satisfied, but not happy, with Korkers’ Chrome wading boot– their high-end model released in early 2011. Guest Poet Timothy E. Haught: Poems by the “Wandering Aengus” 1 May 2012, 3:56 pm
A little while back I got a contact email from Timothy E. Haught wondering if I’d post a few of his fly fishing poems. Timothy’s poems are quite different from my own fly fishing poetry, which is a good thing. Variety is a good thing I always figure. I enjoyed his poems and I hope [...]...

Sometimes it’s the little things…a thread review 7 March 2012, 8:38 pm
For some, the pleasure derived from tying flies is inversely proportional to the size of the fly. Tying flies in the 20′s and even down into the 30′s is for some it’s own reward – never mind catching fish. Small flies do catch fish though and sometimes some mighty big fish. I’ve caught some of [...]...

“I Hate You Salmon” – A Poem of Frustration and Pain. 13 May 2012, 9:55 pm
I went fishing today. It was swell. I discovered over the course of five (painful) hours that I hate landlocked salmon. HATE them. When they get in a taunting mood, I simply cannot deal with them. Early season bronze… 26 April 2012, 7:32 pm
I had an inkling, way back in January, that this might be a bad year for trout and a great year for smallmouth bass fly fishing. The phrase “time flies” may be cliche, but time, it seems, truly does have wings, and even more-so, accelerates like the dive of a falcon as one gets older. On the eve of my 50th birthday, I recall my mother telling me, “if you think 50 seems old, wait until your oldest child turns 50″. [...]...

Best Advice: Go fish! 15 March 2012, 11:39 am
Almost feels like summer out there. Almost. Heat, followed by afternoon storms makes you question the time of the year. Thankfully, the humidity has been relatively low lately, though it's beginning to creep up (52% humidity in Asheville with a temperature of 65° at the 11am observation). The temperatures—which are well above average—are making things feel more like early summer. No wet wading just yet (that water is still going to be chilly) but sooner or later, waders will be overkill an...

Brighter Future Than Previously Expected For the Brook Trout... 27 February 2012, 3:35 pm
This morning's Charlotte Observer... Gas prices. College basketball. Hollywood. Academy Awards. Brook trout. Daytona. Wait... Brook trout? Yep. My eyes immediately deviated from the headlines to the words "brook trout" in a split second. It's pretty cool that our beloved brook trout is getting some face time in the largest newspaper in North and South Carolina. Check out the article here.

Fly Fishing and Conservation 12 December 2011, 6:52 am
When first learning to fly fish, all of our energies are consumed in mastering the basics; getting the right gear, learning to cast, becoming comfortable wading through the stream. Then we hook our first trout. When the line goes taut, our adrenaline spikes. We somehow manage to get the fish to the net and break out in a wide smile, whether the fish is a eight inch brown or an eighteen inch rainbow.
We begin to become comfortable in our own skin as anglers and we have held a good number...

Fly Fishing and Compassion 29 August 2011, 10:15 pm
Compassion is a core value in many religious traditions. Judaism teaches that everyone, no matter how poor, must give tzedakah, charity, to remember that there is always someone out there in a more difficult situation. Jews must also visit the sick, feed the hungry and perform gemilut hasadim, acts of loving kindness.
A day of fly fishing in Argentina this spring reminded me that compassion can occur on a stream as well. Although not in the famous fly fishing region of Patagonia, my guide Lucas...

Fly Fishing & Frustration 17 January 2011, 3:00 am
Fly fishing is filled with times of frustration: getting rained out on the stream, losing a fly in a low hanging branch, being unable to thread your thin tippet line through the hole of a tiny little hook because your hands are too cold. One time I drove an hour from home to fish a new river. When I opened the trunk to put on my gear, I discovered that I had my vest and net, but had left my fly fishing rod at home.
Perhaps the ultimate frustration in fly fishing is not catching any fish. Somet...

The Fly Fishing Reverend 15 January 2011, 9:12 am
This article on The Fly Fishing Rabbi is by Dr. Michael Attas, a practicing cardiologist, professor and an ordained Episcopal priest. He has avidly pursued fish with the magic of flies all over the world for 40 years. Dr. Attas also writes a column for the Waco Texas Tribune on health, ethics and religion.
Several years ago I was sitting in the Houston Intercontinental Airport when my cell phone rang. It was the wife of Will Spong, who was perhaps my closest mentor in my dual life as a physici...

Fly Fishing for Tarpon, Permit and Bonefish 15 January 2011, 9:03 am
I am very pleased to be able to share this article by my friend Dr. Michael Attas, a practicing cardiologist, ordained Episcopal priest and avid fly fisher:
While I cherish my time on my home waters of the Rockies, I also long for the chance to explore new places with my fly rod and to move into new territories-both physically and spiritually. On a trip to Belize, we searched for the big three for salt water fly fishermen—tarpon, permit and bonefish. Each requires a certain type of equipm...

Is Thanksgiving a Jewish Holiday? 19 November 2010, 3:40 pm
One day in late November a few years ago I ran into a congregant in the hallway of my Temple. She wished me a Happy Thanksgiving. Then she said: “Oh wait a minute. I didn’t mean to offend you. Do you celebrate Thanksgiving?” I said: “Of course! Jews celebrate Thanksgiving.” She laughed, a little embarrassed, and then I wished her a Happy Thanksgiving too.

Fly Fishing the Famous Beaverkill River in Roscoe, New York 8 November 2010, 12:39 pm
Probably the most famous fly fishing river in the Northeast, the Beaverkill begins at Junction Pool in Roscoe New York, where hundreds of fishermen and women test their skills each spring. Roscoe is the center of fly fishing in the Catskills. For over 100 years, the Beaverkill, Willowemec, Delaware and other streams have attracted the preeminent fly fishers in America including Theodore Gordon, Art Flick and Joan and Lee Wulff. Roscoe, New York calls itself “Trout Town USA” and the Cat...

The Drive to The Trout Stream 8 November 2010, 10:29 am
There is something special about the drive to the river. It is a time of transition, as we leave behind our everyday lives and focus only on the stream, the fly rod and the trout. Whether a two hour drive to a local stream our a two day trek to famous rivers in far off countries, the journey to the water can be an opportunity to separate from the world of work and obligation and to enter a quiet, beautiful and natural place.
One August morning a few years ago, I arose well before dawn and pa...

I woke up to some bad news last Monday. My dad called at around 7:15am and it was one of those calls that comes at such an odd time that you immediately know there is something wrong. Turns out my grandmother had passed away in the middle of the night. The past few years had [...]...

Product Review: Jan Siman Bicolor Strike Indicator 8 March 2012, 6:25 pm
Each year that I fish, I continue the process of becoming a more autonomous fly fisherman – that is, buying/making my own stuff rather than relying on friends…call it fly fishing self-determination. Keeping with this trend I decided it was finally time to trade in the backing sighter that Chris tied for me 2 years [...]...

My take on the Green Rock Worm 6 March 2012, 11:47 am
People have been tying and using this design for a few years now, and for good reason. It works.
Adding some bling to it never hurts, however.
I tie mine on a #14 Scud hook, as it gives a nice curve to the finished fly, and a pleasant shape overall.
Materials:
#14 Scud Hook (I use Allen F-002’s)
Small green [...]...

Winter Euro-Nymphing Trips 11 February 2012, 9:21 pm
So, the last few weeks have brought me to a few good streams and creeks that I have neglected over the last year or so. The mild temps have made for some great fishing, as well as good bug activity. Most of my fish came on confidence flies that I have for certain streams . These [...]...

Tying With Stan Episode 2: Fishy’s Hopper 7 December 2011, 10:52 pm
Fishy’s Hopper is a fly Stan gently insisted I learn how to tie and I agreed. I showed up with visions of Orange Stimulators in my head. I’ve tried several times to tie them but I can never get the material proportions right. I always end up with a Size 6 fly tied on a [...]...

Book Review: Dynamic Nymphing by George Daniel 7 May 2012, 9:30 pm
Throughout the year trout feed a disproportional amount of the time under the water. For me even during a recent sulphur hatch on Spring Creek trout were not rising and could be seen actively feeding below the surface. George Daniel's book, Dynamic Nymphing, offers an extensive look at tactics and strategies that get to the heart of subsurface nymph fishing.I enjoy all the puzzles that fly-fishing provides and always appreciate ways to overcome those challenges. George shares the best of these...

By The_SasquatchPhotos by SkybayWe're all back from the 2012 Quill Gordon Summit, and by all accounts the event was a great success! We had a good turn out of about 7 guys; Skybay, Dave_S, Turkey, CSoult, Wetfly_01, The Sasquatch, and my father, Jerry (non-board member). The weekend started for Jerry and me at 5:30am. By 9:15am we were on the Pine Creek in Ansonia not far from Sandfly's shop. We fished for about an hour and then headed over to Sandy's. First thing we noticed was that the water wa...

Fly Fishing Getting Started - Mayfly Sex Identification 102 23 April 2012, 7:20 am
Recently going through my mayfly photographs I found a nice set of pictures from the Paflyfish Spring Jam in 2010. The Green Drake (Ephemera guttulata ) hatch was in full swing that year and photographs of these mayflies was easy and plentiful. Most of the weekend was overcast and rain as normally forecasted for the Spring Jam. Emergers (subimigo) and spinners (imago) were not so much active during the day, but lined the sides of the streams in the hundred's of thousands. I am always torn bet...

Fly Fishing Getting Started - The Mayfly Stages of Life 101 17 April 2012, 8:30 pm
A mayfly hatch is the grand finale in the year long seasonal play that returns annually for trout and anglers. This show begins the previous season with mature female mayflies, called spinners, laying their eggs on the surface of the water. The eggs shortly hatch into small larvae and quickly change to nymphs. The nymph phase of the mayfly is the longest and will last just about one year. During this time the nymph will grow and molt regularly. Molting is when the mayfly breaks out of its old ski...

Ticks - deal with it! 9 April 2012, 4:50 pm
Five years ago this week I got out of the doctors office my prescription of Doxycycline in hand and cruised over to the CVS as quickly as possible. With chills, pains, a headache and aches all over my body including my sternum (felt like a heart attack) I didn't know what the hell was going on. My doctor diagnosed me with Lyme disease even before he ordered the blood work. I never thought of Lyme because I never had the red bulls-eye rash commonly associated with the disease. He explained it w...

Skills for Montana Fly Fishing 2 April 2012, 10:00 am
by Brian McGeehanGuest writer for PaflyfishAs a kid growing up in Pennsylvania I dreamed of visiting the Rocky Mountain West to fish those big rivers that I saw in the fly fishing magazines. Western rivers seemed so different compared to the smaller fisheries that I spent my youth on and I was a bit intimidated when I first arrived in Montana on a summer long geology field trip sponsored by Penn State. I quickly fell in love with the massive feel of the biggest rivers and the wide open surroundi...

A Great Fish 5 March 2012, 1:00 am
This article is another in Dave Weaverâs on going âCasting through Historyâ series. His previous article in this series was John Brownâs Bass. Over the years many of you, if youâve visited Yellow Breeches Anglers in Boiling Springs, have probably gazed at one particular dusty old mounted brown trout. When I was a kid, Iâd look at this fish and think that it wasnât the best taxidermy job. If youâre a Cumberland Valley regular or otherwise familiar with t...

A Knotty Approach to Time on the Water. 28 February 2012, 1:10 pm
While sharing some time on the water the other day with Dave Kile (dkile) I experienced what seems to happen often during a decent hatch with some wind, you guessed it, a wind knot! Or as Lefty Kreh calls them, bad casting knots. Everyone gets them now and then especially when combining a breeze, long leaders and fine tippets. Or for the chuck and duck crowd, of which I am often a member, weight and multiple flies. So as Dave stands upstream pondering my delay to cast to a rising fish, he asks, ...
