I’m Writing What You’re Not Reading (or, How To Enjoy Leftovers) 16 May 2012, 1:56 pm
The weather is drop-dead gorgeous. Yet our hero sits in his downstairs office. Writing his ass off. To pay the bills. Video: 20,000 Trout in a Bucket 18 May 2012, 10:15 am
by Tim Romano
The title of this post is a little misleading. While in theory these little guys are in a bucket, what you're actually seeing here is 20,000 freshly hatched cut bow trout (a hybrid between a cutthroat and a rainbow) in what's called an egg jar.
This is where the little guys get blown around in freshwater at the hatchery before being let loose inside in small raceways when they get a little bigger and have consumed their egg sacs. After that, they are transferred outside...

The Greatest Lesson in Fishing Streamers 16 May 2012, 10:13 am
by Kirk Deeter
Most of you who follow FlyTalk might realize by now that Romano and I are both shameless streamer junkies. We'll pound the banks from a boat, trying to turn big fish with blind casts, but we also like to wade and sight-fish streamers in low, clear water. Big flies catch big fish, to be sure. Yet in clear water, you have to make the right presentation for streamers to work well. While I've learned many valuable tips from streamer gurus like Kelly Galloup, who said, "You have to di...

Tie Talk: Tying the Banksia Bug (Step-by-Step Photos) 15 May 2012, 11:19 am

Here's another sweet little bug from our friends at flyrecipes.com. It's called the Banksia Bug (formerly known as the Patchouli Pupa) and was created by my friend and warm water fly fishing guru Jay Zimmerman.
"I began tying this fly to imitate the masses of free-living caddis larva in all my home waters here in Colorado and elsewhere in trout streams all over the West.
I have rarely found good commercially available flies that can fill this niche. Its a very productive fl...

Low Water Levels Cause Worry in CO, What Will Happen to Fishing? 14 May 2012, 10:13 am
by Kirk Deeter
If you're planning on visiting Colorado to do some fly fishing this year, you might want to do so sooner, rather than later. In stark contrast to last season when above average snowpack had rivers and streams brimming well past the 4th of July, this year's abnormally low snowfall amounts have left many wondering if there will be any runoff at all in some watersheds.
Scenes like this surging spillway are increasingly rare. Denver is more than 35 percent below average rainfall fo...

This is a photo of my friend Russ Miller torturing himself with a 9-weight rod and full sinking line on Lake Granby last night. He was casting a double bunny fly that looked like a dead squirrel, so we decided to call it Bernie's Bunny.

Tarpon May be Ideal Tenkara Fish 10 May 2012, 11:19 am
by Kirk Deeter
Take a close look at this photo Tim Romano took of Oliver White battling a small tarpon. You'll notice something is missing... the reel. That's because there isn't one.
We just came back from a gonzo jungle expedition (in a place I'll tell you about later) where we literally caught hundreds of trout- to salmon-sized tarpon every day. So to make things even more interesting, we decided to catch some on a Tenkara rod (Yamame). We landed over 50 tarpon on Tenkara, the largest weig...

Despite what it says on its Flyrecipes.com page, I'm pretty sure that this week's Tie Talk bug, The Dirty Rat, is not by Jackie Treehorn. Don't get me wrong, I love the character reference to one of my favorite movies of all time, as well the pattern itself. Salmon Thirty Salmon 2 18 May 2012, 3:01 am
Alaska Airlines and the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute on Monday unveiled the world’s largest king salmon. Stretching nearly 129 feet, the fish-themed design will adorn a Boeing 737-800 this fall.
The new “Salmon-Thirty-Salmon II” design is derived from an earlier version of the paint scheme Alaska Airlines unveiled on a 737-400 in 2005.

Piranhaconda 18 May 2012, 3:00 am
Is it even scientifically possible for a snake to breed with a fish? Is it scientifically possible to cram two-zillion B-actors, a CGI monster, and a bunch of mostly naked women into a movie that anyone with basic cable can see for free? Yes!

Growing risks from hatchery fish 17 May 2012, 3:01 am
Further confirmation that hatchery fish suck.
A newly published collection of more than 20 studies by leading university scientists and government fishery researchers in Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, Russia and Japan provides mounting evidence that salmon raised in man-made hatcheries can harm wild salmon through competition for food and habitat.

Fly Fishing and Conservation 12 December 2011, 6:52 am
When first learning to fly fish, all of our energies are consumed in mastering the basics; getting the right gear, learning to cast, becoming comfortable wading through the stream. Then we hook our first trout. When the line goes taut, our adrenaline spikes. We somehow manage to get the fish to the net and break out in a wide smile, whether the fish is a eight inch brown or an eighteen inch rainbow.
We begin to become comfortable in our own skin as anglers and we have held a good number...

Fly Fishing and Compassion 29 August 2011, 10:15 pm
Compassion is a core value in many religious traditions. Judaism teaches that everyone, no matter how poor, must give tzedakah, charity, to remember that there is always someone out there in a more difficult situation. Jews must also visit the sick, feed the hungry and perform gemilut hasadim, acts of loving kindness.
A day of fly fishing in Argentina this spring reminded me that compassion can occur on a stream as well. Although not in the famous fly fishing region of Patagonia, my guide Lucas...

Fly Fishing & Frustration 17 January 2011, 3:00 am
Fly fishing is filled with times of frustration: getting rained out on the stream, losing a fly in a low hanging branch, being unable to thread your thin tippet line through the hole of a tiny little hook because your hands are too cold. One time I drove an hour from home to fish a new river. When I opened the trunk to put on my gear, I discovered that I had my vest and net, but had left my fly fishing rod at home.
Perhaps the ultimate frustration in fly fishing is not catching any fish. Somet...

The Fly Fishing Reverend 15 January 2011, 9:12 am
This article on The Fly Fishing Rabbi is by Dr. Michael Attas, a practicing cardiologist, professor and an ordained Episcopal priest. He has avidly pursued fish with the magic of flies all over the world for 40 years. Dr. Attas also writes a column for the Waco Texas Tribune on health, ethics and religion.
Several years ago I was sitting in the Houston Intercontinental Airport when my cell phone rang. It was the wife of Will Spong, who was perhaps my closest mentor in my dual life as a physici...

Fly Fishing for Tarpon, Permit and Bonefish 15 January 2011, 9:03 am
I am very pleased to be able to share this article by my friend Dr. Michael Attas, a practicing cardiologist, ordained Episcopal priest and avid fly fisher:
While I cherish my time on my home waters of the Rockies, I also long for the chance to explore new places with my fly rod and to move into new territories-both physically and spiritually. On a trip to Belize, we searched for the big three for salt water fly fishermen—tarpon, permit and bonefish. Each requires a certain type of equipm...

Is Thanksgiving a Jewish Holiday? 19 November 2010, 3:40 pm
One day in late November a few years ago I ran into a congregant in the hallway of my Temple. She wished me a Happy Thanksgiving. Then she said: “Oh wait a minute. I didn’t mean to offend you. Do you celebrate Thanksgiving?” I said: “Of course! Jews celebrate Thanksgiving.” She laughed, a little embarrassed, and then I wished her a Happy Thanksgiving too.

The Drive to The Trout Stream 8 November 2010, 10:29 am
There is something special about the drive to the river. It is a time of transition, as we leave behind our everyday lives and focus only on the stream, the fly rod and the trout. Whether a two hour drive to a local stream our a two day trek to famous rivers in far off countries, the journey to the water can be an opportunity to separate from the world of work and obligation and to enter a quiet, beautiful and natural place.
One August morning a few years ago, I arose well before dawn and pa...

ARTICULATED SCULPIN 9 May 2012, 11:46 am
There is a great tip for protecting yourself from the hook point. This is from Al: I grew up in Michigan and have fished as long as I can remember. After graduating college, I moved to California and gravitated toward fly fishing almost exclusively. I have been tying “seriously” since 1983 and have been a tying instructor both independently and for several Colorado fly shops since 2000. In 2005 I also began guiding along Colorado’s front range. Currently I am … Continue reading ͛...

Sometimes it’s the little things…a thread review 7 March 2012, 8:38 pm
For some, the pleasure derived from tying flies is inversely proportional to the size of the fly. Tying flies in the 20′s and even down into the 30′s is for some it’s own reward – never mind catching fish. Small flies do catch fish though and sometimes some mighty big fish. I’ve caught some of [...]...
